Beam up some super early chillies!

Every year, I make it a point to batch test the seeds I plan to grow. It’s my way of ensuring they’re up to the mark with reliably high germination rates. I plant several trays of each chilli to confirm the quality before committing to large-scale planting.

This year, I have a small number of plug plants available now—ready for dispatch in lateJanuary. These little gems come from my December seed tests and have been nurtured under extra grow-lighting.

I have a small number of the following chilli varieties shown below for any chilli lovers who are keen to start super early this year.

Please read the extra information about the need for supplementary lighting and remember to use a free draining medium and to water sparingly.

For the main season, our standard plugs are timed to coincide with lengthening daylight hours (mid to late February onwards).

This ensures optimal light for growth. However, if you’re planning to bring these early plugs into your home, supplementary grow lights aren’t just a recommendation—they’re essential.

Grow lights provide the extra hours of brightness these plants need to thrive during the short winter days, and they even add a little extra warmth, which is invaluable for encouraging steady, healthy growth.

If you’re thinking about grow lights, I offer several Lightbar Kits to suit different setups.

There’s a simple LED blue/purple grow bulb with a flexible arm that’s perfect for five plants, and one- or three-arm gooseneck lights that can accommodate anywhere from three to ten plants in their intermediate 9cm pots.

These lights aren’t just convenient—they’re the difference between struggling plants and a bountiful crop.

While grow lights can work wonders by extending the day and adding warmth, there’s still no substitute for sunlight. Plug plants should always have pride of place on a warm, sunny windowsill.

Keep them insulated from below, and don’t leave them behind the curtains at night. As for watering, go easy—sparingly is the word of the day. A coir-based growing medium works beautifully to prevent waterlogging and keep their roots happy.

Here’s an interesting tip: the Chinense species (often the super-hots) grow stockier with broader leaves, while the Annuum and Baccatum varieties tend to stretch upwards more quickly.

At this time of year, with the reduced light, it’s best to pinch out the tips of Annuum varieties to encourage bushier, stockier growth. A little pruning now will pay dividends later. It will also keep them more manageable on your windowsill until it's time for the great outdoors.

Shine a Light on Your Seedlings

• Short Days: Natural daylight is too limited in the very early spring for the 12-16 hours of light chilli seedlings need to grow strong and healthy.

• Prevent Stretching: Without enough light, seedlings become tall and spindly (leggy), weakening their stems and overall structure.

• Boost Growth: Grow lights provide consistent, bright light that helps plants develop more leaves and stronger roots.
