Jay's Peach Scorpion Chilli Plug Plant

Jay's Peach Ghost Chilli Plug Plant

Sweet peach, ghostly punch: Heat Level: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Jay's Peach Scorpion Chilli is a unique cross between two of the most formidable superhot varieties: Bhut Jolokia and the Trinidad Scorpion.

Developed in Pennsylvania by Jay Weaver, this chilli has quickly gained a reputation for its intense heat and stunning appearance. As it is only in its sixth generation, growers may notice some variation in pod shape and colour, but this only adds to its allure for those who enjoy cultivating chillies with a bit of unpredictability.

Unlike many other lighter-coloured superhots, Jay's Peach Scorpion defies the expectation of being milder. Instead, it packs a searing punch that rivals the heat of the hottest red and chocolate variants.

The chilli's flavour profile is surprisingly refined, with floral notes and a subtle sweetness that complements its intense heat. This makes it an intriguing choice for those who are not only looking for heat but also a complex, nuanced flavour.

In 2020, I had the chance to grow two of these plants, and both proved to be extremely fruitful, producing an abundance of strikingly beautiful pods that were, frankly, a bit too hot for even my taste.

Jay's Peach Scorpion Chilli is not just a firecracker in terms of heat; it's also an ornamental addition to any greenhouse. The pods mature to a lovely peachy hue, and their unique shape makes them stand out among other superhots.

Despite its intensity, this chilli is considered one of the easier superhots to grow, flowering and fruiting readily, even for those new to cultivating extreme chillies. It's an unusual and rewarding plant for dedicated followers of the superhots, offering both a visual and sensory experience that is sure to impress.

1. Easy to Grow: Some chillies are just a joy to grow — compact and happy in a pot (5). Others shoot off in all directions or sulk. (1). I’ve given higher scores to the ones that do well here in the UK.

2. Ornamental Quality: A few of these are real show-offs, with pods that look like jewels or dramatic foliage . Others are more practical than pretty. This score is just about how good they look.

3. Heat Level: This isn’t a technical SHU score — it’s just a kitchen-friendly 1 to 5. A 1 means very mild (like a jalapeño), a 5 is properly hot (think Bhut Jolokia). It should help you judge!

4. Hardiness: How well do they cope with our unpredictable summers? I’ve given higher scores to the tough ones that keep going through cool nights, wind, or patchy weather.

5. Culinary Use: This one’s about how often I actually use them. Some are perfect for pickling, others for stuffing, sauces or powders. If it’s flavourful and versatile, it scores high.
