Peach Sugar Rush is one of those chillies that lives up to its name — and then some. Bred by Chris Fowler in Wales, this striking baccatum variety is as generous as it is beautiful.

The plants grow tall and elegant, and once they hit their stride, they just keep producing. It’s not unusual to see them dripping with long, peach-coloured pods well into autumn.

What really sets it apart, though, is the flavour. Bite into one and you’ll understand the name immediately: a rush of juicy sweetness followed by a surprisingly punchy heat that creeps up rather than slams in. There’s something almost sherbety about it — fruity, bright, and completely addictive.

I’ve found it to be a reliable grower, even in a pot. The plants are tall but not difficult, and if you keep feeding and picking, they’ll reward you all season long.

Whether you’re making a fresh salsa, slicing them onto a salad, or fermenting for a hot sauce, Peach Sugar Rush adds a unique complexity that’s hard to beat.

▶ Heat Level: Medium to hot – typically between 50,000 and 100,000 Scoville Heat Units. Starts sweet, then builds to a lively burn.

▶ Vigorous Growth: Tall, upright plants with strong stems and heavy yields. Benefits from staking and regular feeding.

▶ Fruit Appearance: Long, slightly curved pods that ripen from pale green to a soft peachy orange. Often wrinkled, with a distinctive shape.

▶ Flavour Profile: Sweet and fruity with a sharp, building heat. Sherbety and tangy, making it perfect for fresh use, sauces, or fermenting.

▶ Fruiting Time: Begins fruiting mid-season and continues well into autumn. Very long cropping period if kept picked.

▶ Growing Conditions: Thrives in warm, sunny spots with well-drained soil. Grows well in large pots or open ground. Tall plants benefit from support.

▶ 1. Easy to Grow: Some chillies are just a joy to grow — compact, reliable, and happy in a pot (5). Others shoot off in all directions or sulk at the first sign of wind (1). I’ve given higher scores to the ones that do well here in the UK.

▶ 2. Ornamental Quality: A few of these are real show-offs, with pods that look like jewels or dramatic foliage that turns heads. Others are more practical than pretty. This score is just about how good they look on the patio or in the greenhouse.

▶ 3. Heat Level: This isn’t a technical SHU score — it’s just a kitchen-friendly 1 to 5. A 1 means very mild (like a jalapeño), a 5 is properly hot (think Bhut Jolokia). It should help you judge what you’re in for!

▶ 4. Hardiness: How well do they cope with our unpredictable summers? I’ve given higher scores to the tough ones that keep going through cool nights, wind, or patchy weather without much fuss.

▶ 5. Culinary Use: This one’s about how often I actually use them. Some are perfect for pickling, stuffing or powders — others look good but don’t end up in many meals. If it’s flavourful and versatile, it scores high.
